Preparing Your Tulsa Property for the Upcoming Winter Storm
Tulsa is getting some major winter weather in the coming days. Winter storms are nothing new for Oklahoma, a little prep can go a long way in protecting your home, landscape, and outdoor spaces.
At Tom’s Outdoor Living, we’re prepping our crews to respond. In the meantime, here are a few simple steps homeowners can take to get ready before the storm arrives.
Simple Steps to Prepare Your Landscape
Turn off all irrigation systems.
Freezing temperatures can cause irrigation lines and heads to crack or burst. Shutting systems down ahead of time helps prevent costly repairs once things thaw.
Move or cover potted plants.
Container plants are more vulnerable to freezing than in-ground plants. Bring them indoors if possible, or cover them to help insulate roots from extreme cold.
Deep water plants and trees before the storm.
A thorough watering before freezing temperatures helps insulate root systems and reduces stress caused by sudden cold snaps.
Avoid walking on frozen turf.
Grass is especially fragile when frozen. Foot traffic can damage crowns and lead to thinning or dead patches in spring.
Use caution with deicers.
Avoid traditional rock salt on pavers, natural stone, and newer concrete. Pet-safe or calcium-based deicers are a better option for protecting hardscape surfaces.
