Armyworms in Tulsa: Why so Destructive and How to Spot Them

If your lawn suddenly looks brown or “burned” in random patches you might be dealing with armyworms.

These fast-moving lawn pests can destroy turf, landscaping, and even vegetable gardens in a matter of days… especially during hot, wet Oklahoma summers like this year!

What Are Armyworms?

Armyworms are the larval (caterpillar) stage of a moth. They get their name from the way they move in large numbers, “marching” across lawns like a tiny army and eating everything in their path. (If only we had “Navy worms” to combat these pesky critters…)

You’ll usually spot them late summer into fall — especially after a stretch of rain followed by warm temperatures.

Why They’re So Destructive

Armyworms feed fast! Just a few dozen can strip a lawn of lush green grass, and because they tend to show up all at once, it often looks like the damage happened overnight.

They don’t just eat turfgrass either. They’ll chew on vegetable gardens, flowers, and newly laid sod too. Left untreated, a light infestation can turn into a full-blown lawn replacement bill.

Common Signs of Armyworm Damage

  • Patches of grass that suddenly look scorched or straw-like
  • Lawns that look “mowed down” or thinned
  • Caterpillars curled up on sidewalks, patios, or crawling through the grass
  • Birds flocking to your yard to peck (they’re hunting larvae)

Why They’re So Bad THIS Year

Armyworm outbreaks get worse when we’ve had:

  • Heavy rainfall + heat
  • Mild winters
  • Storms/wind activity

That’s why some summers/falls hit much harder than others in the Tulsa area.

Stop Them Before They Spread

Once you spot early damage or live larvae in the grass, don’t wait. Armyworms multiply. An insecticide treatment at the first sign can save you hundreds (or thousands) in lawn repair.
