This project for a young couple with kids features a sleek plunge pool and entertaining space within the small backyard of their new home. The plunge pool with a tanning ledge was the perfect solution for the limited space. The deck at the level of the living room’s massive sliding door creates a great flow from inside to outside.
With the house located in the center of midtown, we knew wanted to create a private oasis within their backyard – somewhere the they can go to relax or to entertain guests.
Choosing mixed materials and tones is a great way to create different senses of space within zones. Here the pool zone features a durable concrete design with a salt finish, with great drainage and light tones to cut down on heat. The decking helps to isolate lounge spaces while keeping them unified visually. The rough cedar posts provide bold vertical elements. Cedar also provides the “ceiling” of the pergola over one of the couches to give us a more enclosed space above the pool. A great place to sit back and enjoy the modern fire pit.
The pool area is enhanced by a large stone planter filled color and the trees along the back fence are posed to create a comfortable natural screen as they mature. The space is elevated by the metal fencing and artificial turf, providing clean modern lines while remaining true to the classic nature of the midtown space.
